The world of Dunki begins with three friends Manu (Taapsee), Balli (Anil Grover), and Baggu (Vikram Kochchar), who illegally immigrated to London 25 years ago and now desperately want to go back to India. Manu then dials Hardy aka Hardayal Singh Dhillon (Shah Rukh Khan) in Punjab, who she is sure will help them. The story then takes you back to 1995 in Laltu, Punjab where it all began – when the trio along with Sukhi (Vicky Kaushal in a cameo) dreamt of settling in London for a better life. Comes Shah Rukh Khan who stumbles upon the four people and helps them to go abroad, first legally, and then through Donkey Route, facing adversaries. It is no surprise that Shah Rukh Khan plays a young and aged man in the film.

SRK is the star attraction in Dunki and the film presents him in an avatar that we have seen earlier as well, in fact, multiple times over. As the young clean shaven hero falling for the first girl he met in Punjab where he had come looking for someone, he is endearing and sweet. But, he gets better in the second half, when that stubble grows and the gang is on their way to London through paths and routes that are as difficult as it gets. Be it crossing the desserts in Iran or snowy mountains of their next destination, Khan doesn’t fail to charm you. Of course after action packed Pathaan and Jawan earlier this year, Dunki is a total contrast and in that sense, it’s refreshing to see SRK doing what he is best at. Taapsee as Manu is so natural, and her Punjabi genes definitely make her accent and body language way more authentic than any other female lead portraying a Punjabi woman’s role. In the emotionally charged scenes, Taapsee showcases a strong grip on her character, and in the funny ones, too, she holds her ground.

Overall, Dunki is seen as a must-watch because of its interesting story and how well it’s made. Some people find it mind-boggling and funny, while others just think it’s a good movie. Dunki has a very good first half, which majorly relies on comedy. There are a good number of scenes that will tickle the funny bones. Those humor scenes have Hirani mark written all over them. In the promotional content, the comedy part didn’t look much promising, but they were too good in the film.

Dunki movie Minus Points:

There is not a single tear-jerking moment, which is a big minus. Also.. the story is another minus of the movie. The writers fail miserably to emotionally connect a very small point. The lack of Vidhu Vinod Chopra in this movie unit is obvious.

When Rajkumar Hirani announced Dunki, everyone wondered what the movie would be about. Slowly, the team started to reveal that Dunki means crossing the borders in an illegal way. So, the biggest challenge for Hirani here was the screenplay. The topic is very difficult to deal with, and the even more difficult part was to tell this concept in a crowd-pleasing manner. While Hirani gets it right with regard to humor, the emotions could have been handled in a much better manner.

Hirani’s earlier works, 3 Idiots, PK, Munna Bhai MBBS, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, and Sanju, had hard-hitting emotional moments, but when it comes to Dunki, Hirani’s mark is missing a bit in this aspect. Vicky Kaushal’s cameo should have been more impactful. The staging of the interval sequence isn’t good, and hence, the desired impact is missing.
